英文的"三字經"，是四個字

Four letter words 是指英文的三字經，
Fxxx Sxxx 都是四個字母 
Four letter words 這個字的用法跟我們提到三字經時一樣，
就是不想直接說出那個髒話，而用這個字代替
有一個笑話是這麼說的：

A young couple got married and left on their honeymoon. 
When they got back, the bride(新娘) immediately(馬上) called her mother.

Her mother asked, "How was the honeymoon?"

"Oh, mama," she replied, "the honeymoon was wonderful! So romantic..." 
 Suddenly, she burst out crying (突然大哭). 
"But mama, as soon as we returned, 
Sam started using the most horrible(可怕的) language...
 things I had never heard before!
 I mean, all these awful(可怕的) 4-letter words!

 You've got to come get me and take me home... Please, mama!"
"Sarah, Sarah," her mother said, "calm down(冷靜下來)! 


Tell me, what could be so awful? What 4-letter words?"

"Please don't make me tell you, mama," 
wept (weep，哭泣的過去式) the daughter. 
"I'm so embarrassed. They're just too awful! Come get me, please!"

"Darling, baby, you must tell me what has you so upset (心煩)...
Tell your mother these horrible 4-letter words!"

Still sobbing(啜泣), the bride said,
 "Oh, mama...words like DUST, WASH, IRON, COOK...!"

DUST - 擦拭灰塵，WASH-清洗(衣物)，IRON-熨燙(衣物)，COOK-烹煮食物

Oops, 我也覺得這些four word letters好可怕呀XD

小時候看灰姑娘這個卡通，以為Cinderella是個英文名字，
因為中文字幕是翻成「仙度瑞拉」

看了東尼的介紹後，才知道，原來是
Cinder + ella
Cinder  是灰； (未燃盡煤炭, 木頭等的)餘燼
ella 是表示女生名字的字尾

所以這個字是沾滿灰的女孩
是後母跟兩個壞姊姊故意這樣叫她的，笑他身上常常因打掃而灰頭土臉的！

現在這是個單字，意思是：「灰姑娘; 打雜女佣人」
感覺還是翻灰姑娘好，不然搞不好會有人取這個英文名字，那就好玩了^^"

Against All Odds ≠再看我一眼

西城男孩有翻唱一首歌叫：Against All Odds
中文翻成：再看我一眼

以前也沒特別去查哪怪怪的
後來發現，Against All Odds ≠再看我一眼
台灣不管是電影、歌名，有時候翻譯都不會直翻
而是會抓故事內容、歌詞內容來翻
這樣有好有壞啦
大陸的直翻，有時候還蠻好笑的XD

只要查一下字典就會發現，
against 是違反、反對等比較接近對立的意思!
odds 是機率 
(如果沒加s 是另外一個單字，odd-單數的、奇怪的)

所以Against All Odds 應該直翻成違反機率=>也就是機率很低的意思
如果以大陸式翻譯，會不會直接翻成「沒有希望」？
如果歌名叫沒有希望，感覺要賣的機會也沒有希望了XD

那再看我一眼這個翻譯怎來的？ 要看這一段歌詞：

總之，就是借了第一句的意思，來當這首歌的歌名!

昨天看到Discovery星期天話題:911事件勇氣航班，馬上就想到這首歌

運用政治、宗教當武器，灌輸敵我思想，催眠信仰者發動"聖"戰

用恐怖的手法的確是得到關注了！但不會是關懷、了解；

只是產生更大的隔閡：

雙方都不願意去原諒對方、了解對方、化解衝突，然後惡性循環...

中文翻譯歌詞

這首歌很多地方都押韻(rhyme)喔~ 所以聽起來更加順耳~ 好聽^^

*註1 spoon 當名詞時，是大家熟悉的湯匙(圖)
But, baby how we spoon like no one else 又是什麼意思？
我們"湯匙的"像沒有其他人"湯匙"過一樣？
It doesn't make any sense...

原來spoon有另一個意思：
informal To engage in amorous behavior, such as kissing or caressing. (source)
【口】談情說愛; 動手動腳 (source)

有一個跟spoon單字長得像，東西也長的像的詞：
scoop - 勺子； 常見的就是挖冰淇淋用的那種勺子(圖)
所以一球、二球冰淇淋，不是球類運動的ball, 是用scoop算的！

一球冰淇淋：one scoop of ice cream
二球冰淇淋：two scoops of ice cream

昨天想到train時，想到音有一點接近的 tame這個字，

當動詞：馴化, 使順從
例句：The Asian elephant can be tamed and trained. (source)

當形容詞：  馴服的, 柔順的, 乏味的
例句：Cows are tame animals. (source)
例句：She is too tame. (source)
例句：I quite enjoyed the book but found the ending rather tame.  (source)
 
除了動物之外，被形容tame都是有點無趣啊~

attempt vs try
By the way, attempt是什麼意思？
跟 try同義，都是「努力嘗試做某事」，不過有細微的差別：

attempt - 常指初次做，含冒險或可能失敗的意味
try - 常指多次嘗試做某事，含雖然失敗但不氣餒，仍繼續努力的意味


tame 我還想到了一個音很接近的字 tan
這個字實用之處在於看到皮膚曬成小麥色辣妹/帥哥，可以誇她說 Nice tan!

要怎麼加強這個單字拼法的印象呢？
前面有介紹過 拼單字遊戲 

而tame這個單字的組合，可以變出什麼變化？

tame 

-> team -> meat -> mate

->eat, (ate), tea, tan

->at, am

training: 普通用词，泛指为从事某种职业而进行的身体或智力方面的训练。

後面加名詞：

根據某個很cheap的人的實際經驗是：

以前學英文的時候，都會學到 cheap就是便宜
看到東西便宜的時候，自然就會覺得要說 It's cheap.

後來才發現，cheap拿來形容人、東西時，意思不單純

cheap 拿來形容東西，除了便宜的意思外，還有種廉價、東西不好的意思

拿來形容人呢？　

就給他變成：吝嗇、摳、小氣的意思

所以說別人cheap就是說他小氣！
不是指他很便宜喔！

如果要說一個東西很划算的話，要說 It's a bargain 比較不會造成誤會

至於東西貴的話要怎麼說？
It's expensive. - 最早學到的用法，跟cheap是相反詞
It's overpricing .
It's overcharge.

後面兩個說法，都是over + 價格 合成的單字，
pricing 是價格， price的變化
charge是索費；主詞是向你索費的店家

price跟charge 兩者的差別？ 

請看例句：
The watch was priced at $200.  (from yahoo dictionary)
The store charges $200 for this watch.

跟cost 的差別呢？

The watch costs me $200.

買東西大家最在乎的CP值的C就是cost的縮寫；主詞是東西。

學英文≠背單字, Let's Globish

前一篇的兩個英文拼字的遊戲，是幫助記單字用的~
英文具備基本的字彙數後(國中畢業)， 就開始看漫畫吧！ \^o^/  (英文的啦)

學英文≠背單字

字彙雖然是看懂一篇文章的基礎，
不過一篇文章，有時候不需要全部的英文單字都知道意思~

先用猜的！ make a guess!

如果這個單字就出現這麼1百零1次，就先丟一邊吧！
而出現很多次的單字，一定要查出意思，
對他大唱：「我的字典裡沒有放棄，因為你鎖定你」
直到背下這個單字為止

當然背單字的時候，能順便把他的例句也記下來最好，
這樣以後才會用這個單字；

而有的單字有多種意思、或是動詞跟名詞同形，
能記多少就記多少，最好日記裡全是他~  這樣劉子千會很感動的!

不過我的意思也不是不要背單字
我的意思是還是要背，不過要背就要背有用的！會用的！
不然唸你就白唱了~
